What is AIDS?

Whar Is AIDS?

What is AIDS? “The full form of AIDS is Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome which is a chronic disease and also considered a life-threatening disease. AIDS is a transmissible disease that means it transfers from one person to another but only when the body fluid of an infected person comes in the contact with the body fluid of another one.”

What Caused AIDS?

AIDS is caused by a virus named HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). HIV is likely transmitted in humans through chimpanzees. HIV is a very dangerous virus and it first originated in Africa, from where it spread out all around the world. According to an official report, there are approximately 38.4 million were globally reported at the end of the year 2021. This might have increased in the year 2023.

HIV mainly affects your immune system, it destroys the ability of your immune system to fight against pathogens and weakens it day by day. Somewhere that is why the name of the disease caused by HIV named Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.

What Transmitted AIDS?

As we have talked about this early, AIDS transmits only when the body fluid of an infected person comes in the contact with the body fluid of another one. So the body fluids can be –

  • Blood
  • Semen
  • Pre-seminal fluids
  • Rectal fluids
  • Vaginal fluids
  • Breast milk

Symptoms of AIDS

Just like every disease AIDS also has some common symptoms to detect, most of the infected people experience flu-like symptoms after 2-3 weeks of getting infected, so here we are sharing some common symptoms of AIDS.

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Rash
  • Night sweats
  • Muscle aches
  • Sore throat
  • Fatigue
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Mouth ulcers

Stages of HIV

AIDS-causing virus HIV can be present in multiple stages and each stage acts differently in the body and engulfs your immune system slowly. There are a total of three main stages of HIV, these are as follows –

  • Acute HIV Infection – Acute HIV Infection is the earliest stage of HIV, infected person feels flu-like symptoms during this stage. The level of the HIV virus is very high in the blood at this stage so the risk of transmission increases. It is said that the one who starts ART (Antiretroviral therapy) in this stage may experience benefits in their health.
  • Chronic HIV Infection – Chronic HIV Infection is the second stage of HIV, an infected person does not experience flu-like symptoms and HIV can take 10 years to develop in the advanced stage. Sometimes more than 10 years or less than 10 years. Chronic HIV Infection is still transmissible but if you are taking ART as prescribed then the risk of transferring HIV to a non-infected partner during sex reduces.
  • AIDS – AIDS is the final and most severe stage of HIV. At this stage, the infected person loses their ability to fight against the disease because their immune system got weakened. Without treatment, people infected with AIDS can not survive more than 2-3 years.
