Difference Between Chandrayaan 2 and Chandrayaan 3

There are some crucial objects in which we can make a difference between Chandrayaan 2 and Chandrayaan 3.

Chandrayaan 2 included three parts in itself – the orbiter, the lander, and the rover but Chandrayaan 3 include only two parts – the lander and the rover, there will be no orbiter. 

Wheres Chandrayaan 2 rocket name was Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III and Chandrayaan 3 rocket name is also Launch Vehicle Mark-3/Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III. Chandrayaan 2 and Chandrayaan 3 launching site is the same that is Satish Dhawan Space Centre.

Chandrayaan 2 launch date was 22 July 2019 whereas Chandrayaan 3 launch date is scheduled for June 2023.

Chandrayaan 2 lander Vikram was five 800 Newtons engines and the fifth one was mounted centrally but Chandrayaan 3 will have four throttle-able engines. 

The lander of Chandrayaan 3 will also be equipped with Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) which was not in the Chandrayaan 2.

Additionally, the legs of Chandrayaan 3 landers are manufactured stronger than Chandrayaan 2, and also the structural rigidity and contingency systems are increased and multiplied in the number to intend 100 percent success this time.

Chandrayaan 3 Launch Date

Chandrayaan 2 launch date was 22 July 2019 and after completing the whole process the Vikram lander touched the lunar surface (Moon Surface) on 6 September 2019, however, a tiny deviation from the intended landing location led to a crash landing.

Chandrayaan 3 launch date was 14 July 2023 and after 21 days of orbiting around the Earth, the spacecraft entered the Moon orbit on 5 August. Of course, this number may vary from the original but ISRO has to spend something around this. So the Chandrayaan 3 budget is ₹615 crore (US$77 million) whereas, Chandrayaan 2 was launched at the cost of ₹870 crore.

Chandrayaan 3 Launch Vehicle

Chandryaan 2 launch vehicle was a Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III which helped the spacecraft to be successfully established in the planned orbit of the Earth on 22 July 2019.

Whereas Chandrayaan 3 launch vehicle will also be Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III also known as Launch Vehicle Mark-3 which will help the Chandrayaan 3 spacecraft to successfully land on the Moon surface or Lunar surface following the third attempt by ISRO from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota.

Chandrayaan 3 Engine

Chandrayaan 3 is the third attempt by ISRO following Chandrayaan 2 and it seems like the whole mission may be similar but by keeping the last mistakes in mind ISRO scientists and Chandrayaan 3 project director have made some changes and one of them is Chandrayaan 3 engine. There will be a slight difference between Chandrayaan 2 and Chandrayaan 3 engine designs.

Where Chandrayaan 2 spacecraft was containing five 800 Newtons engines Chandrayaan 3 spacecraft will contain throttle-able engines. These changes must have been done by keeping the last-minute glitch in mind so that Chandrayaan 3 can make a soft landing on the lunar surface and also successfully accomplish the planned mission.

Chandrayaan 3 Test

Before meeting the final mission preparation is everything, and Chandrayaan 3 tests will also be the main part of the mission. Chandrayaan 3 test has been successfully conducted.

Chandrayaan 3 test was conducted on 24 February 2023 at the ISRO Propulsion Complex, Mahendragiri in Tamil Nadu. The test was planned for 25 seconds and has been successfully conducted.

Chandrayaan 3 Rover Name

Chandrayaan 3 Rover name is similar to the Chandrayaan 2 and that is Pragyan Rover. Chandrayaan 3 spacecraft that will land on the Lunar South Pole will include only a rover. Pragyan Rover will examine the lunar surface and will send the samples to the ISRO so that the scientists can analyze the data sent by the Rover.

Chandrayaan 3 Lander Name

Chandrayaan 3 lander name is also similar to the Chandrayaan 2 and that of Vikram Lander. When Chandrayaan 3 Vikram Lander will softly lands on the lunar south pole surface, the Pragyan rover will detach from it. Well, there will be no orbiter in the Chandrayaan 3 as the orbiter was successfully established in the planned Moon orbiter last time during Chandrayaan 2 mission.

Chandrayaan 3 Landing Site

Chandrayaan 3 landing site will be the same as Chandrayaan 2 landing site and that is Lunar South Pole with the mission to search for life clues there.

Chandrayaan 3 Partnership With Japan

Chandrayaan 3 is not only powered by ISRO but Japan will also help India to accomplish this mission. In the Chandrayaan 3 partnership with Japan, India will provide Lander whereas Launcher and Rover will be the responsibility of Japan.

Following the unsuccessful landing of the Vikram lander, a new mission was undertaken to showcase the necessary landing abilities for the Lunar Polar Exploration Mission that is jointly proposed Chandrayaan 3 partnership with Japan.

According to the contract European Space Agency (ESA) will also support in this mission during critical flight operations.
