Without labour, there is no possibility to manufacture any infrastructure. Labors are the main root of any business, industry, or sector, but the huge was, nobody was ready to accept their hard work and even was mistreated. So International Labour Day played a huge role to give laborers a remarkable place in society. Now let’s see the story behind International Workers Day origin.
International Labour Day History
Before the 19th century, laborers were treated like slaves, they were made to do whatever they wanted. Whereas in other professions the employee was made to work only for 8 hours, and the laborers were made to work for 16-17 hours. It was absolutely disgusting and the workers did not even have the courage to raise their voices against it. But when the organization is formed, then no one else has the courage to stand in front of them. The workers did the same.
In 1886, the workers of the United States decided to go on strike by forming an organization. This strike was announced by the workers on May 1, 1886, and the purpose of pursuing this strike was only to reduce the laborers’ working hours from 16 hours to 8 hours per day. This sounds so exotic to give physical work for 16 hours in a day.
This strike lasted for 4 days. On May 4, 1886, with the aim of dissolving the protests, the police bombed. Many Protesters and many policemen lost their lives in this incident. Also, many Protesters were injured. Even after the incident, no action was taken immediately regarding the situation of the laborers. This protest was happening in the Haymarket of Chicago.
Even though the workers did not have immediate success, what happened in Chicago’s Haymarket remained in the hearts and minds of everyone. The Second International, a global organization of several socialist parties and trade unions, heeded the workers’ demand for an 8-hour working day and in the year 1889 declared May 1 as International Labor Day. So this is how International Labour Day originated and this was the history of International Labour Day.
