Major Dhyan Chand

Major Dhyan Chand is known as Hockey Wizard. He was born on 29 August 1905 in Allahabad (Prayagraj), Uttarpradesh to a Kushwaha Rajput family. Chand’s father served in the British Indian Army, where he was a member of the Hockey Team. Dhyan Chand started his hockey career with the regimental team of the British Indian Army. After duty, he used to practice Hockey in the moonlight at night.

India won seven out of eight Gold Medals in the Olympics from 1928 to 1956 and Major Dhyan Chand scored close to 400 goals internationally and around 1000 goals in his entire career. Major Dhyan Chand was awarded The Padma Bhushan in 1956, the same year he retired from the army at the age of 43 with the rank of Major.
