International Day of Yoga is initiated at the suggestion of the Current Prime Minister of India “Shri Narendra Modi”. During the United Nations address at the General Assembly on 27 September 2014, Narendra Modi suggest celebrating a day for Yoga with the title “International Day of Yoga”. He suggested the date 21 June as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
Attendees from around 177 Countries accepted his proposal to celebrate 21 June as the International Day of Yoga and adopted it worldwide. So the International Day of Yoga was first celebrated on 21 June 2015 globally and spread the message of mental and physical well-being through Yoga practices.

The first International Day of Yoga in India and worldwide was commemorated on 21 June 2015. There was a huge arrangement and event was took place on the first International Day of Yoga in India to promote Yoga globally.
The Ministry of AAYUSH which is responsible for the development of education, research, and traditional medicine system in India, made the required arrangements on the Kartavya Path (Previously known as Rajpath) for 35,985 people including PM Narendra Modi and dignitaries from 84 nations. PM Modi with 84 dignitaries did Yoga for 35 Minutes and performed 21 Asanas.
