The former PM declared 11 May as National Technology Day because India made its Nuclear Test successful which is known as the Pokharan Nuclear Test on the same date earlier one year. India attempt its third Nuclear Test in the year 1998 and the code name Operation Shakti was assigned to the mission. Operation Shakti takes place in the Indian Army Pokharan Testing Range in Rajasthan. On 11 May 1998, India tested three Nuclear Bombs (one fusion & two fission) underground successfully and listed its name in the elite squad of NUCLEAR-ARMED nations.

Following Operation Shakti 2 Additional Nuclear Bombs were tested on 13 May. Operation Shakti was conducted by the collaboration of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMDER), and the Bhabha Atomic Centre (BARC) with the Indian Army.

Here I would like to remind you of something important that the Pokharan II Nuclear Test was the third test took place by India. Before this two attempts were already made, out of which one was successful.

During the tenure of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Operation Smiling Buddha or Operation Happy Krishna was conducted in the year 1974 at the same Indian Army Testing Range of Pokharan. It is known as the Pokharan I Nuclear test and was consist of only one Nuclear bomb which India made successfully tested.

Apart from that India also planned a Nuclear Test in 1995 but US Intelligence got to know about India’s preparation and thus the mission got failed and thus was conducted again in the year 1998 under the leadership of the Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

After joining the elite squad of nuclear nations, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ji declared 11 May as the National Technology Day in the year 1999. So this was the history of National Technology Day of India.
