The History of World Ozone Day

The Ozone Layer was first discovered in the year 1913 by French physicists Charles Fabry and Henri Buisson. After that in the year 1929, the maximum altitude of the Ozone Layer was determined by using a spectrophotometer invented by British meteorologist G. M. B. Dobson. In 1930, it was discovered how the Ozone Layer is forming around the Earth and what is the mechanism of its formation by Sydney Chapman.

Humans felt the need to protect or preserve the Ozone Layer when the first hole in the Ozone Layer was observed in the year 1985 in Antarctica. Following the global issue, in the Vienna Convention, the resolution to protect Ozone Layer was adopted on 22 March 1985. It was the first time that Ozone Layer depletion was a concern at the global level and has been taken action against the causes of its depletion.

Following the adoption of the Ozone Layer protection resolution, The Montreal Protocol was formed and drafted in the UN General Assembly on 16 September 1987. Later in the year 1994, the UGA announced the day 16 September as the International Day for the Preservation of Ozone Layers or World Ozone Day.

The Montreal Protocol

The Montreal Protocol was introduced to protect the Ozone Layer by controlling the production and consumption of the substances that harm the Ozone Layer including – Halons, Halocarbon, Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC), and Hydro Chlorofluorocarbons (HCFC). Apart from that, there are many other compounds that produce Chlorine and Bromine which played a major role in the depletion of the Ozone Layer like methyl bromide, methyl chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, etc.

The main aim of the Montreal Protocol is to control and eliminate the global production of the substances included in the above-given names but the total number of chemicals that need to be controlled and eliminated is more than 100 chemicals.

The Montreal Protocol is the basis of International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer because on the day of 16 September in the year 1987, when the Montreal Protocol was signed, later in 1994 it was announced to be celebrated as World Ozone Day.

The Ozone Hole

The Ozone Hole does not mean an actual hole but the exceptionally depleted area in the layer of the Ozone shield around the Planet. Actually, the areas where Ozone Gas is present are 220 Dobson or less than it is considered as the Ozone hole which was first discovered in 1985 in the region over Antarctica.

The Antarctica Ozone Hole is the only hole observed in the protective shield around the Earth and it is been snapshot daily for the observance.

Significance of Ozone Layer
